Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844-1926) was an American Impressionist painter who spent most of her life in France, where she became friend with Edgar Degas. She is one of only three women ever to join the French Impressionists.

Her work was shown in several Impressionist exhibition. She often depicts the private and social life of women. In the lodge is part of a series of canvases representing ladies at the Opera and represents the pictorial style of Mary Cassatt.
