This view of the outer-harbour at Le Havre is one of the masterpieces of French Impressionist painting.

The work was presented in an exhibition in Paris at the photographer Nadar's studio.

The art critic Louis Leroy made derisive comments about the painting and entitled his article "L'exposition des impressionnistes",

the exhibition of the impressionists, inadvertently coining the name of this new art movement.

As with many of Monet's paintings, the composition verges on the abstract.

Only a few details can be made out in the hazy atmosphere of the harbour.
