By 1887, Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) had already developed his own personal style, a synthesis between Impressionism and Pointillism.

It's likely that this painting was created for the birth of his brother'son.

It is the outcome of a series of Japanese style exercises inspired by the study of Adolphe Monticelli's flower paintings.
